Civil Registration

The registration of non-Catholic marriages in Ireland began in 1845, and the registration of all births, marriages and deaths began in 1864. In the early years civil registration is incomplete. The pre-1922 records for all of Ireland are at the General Register Office at Joyce House in Dublin. Those dating from 1922 onwards are at the General Register Office at Oxford House in Belfast for the Northern Ireland counties or at Joyce House in Dublin for the Republic of Ireland counties.

The Family History Library (FHL) in Salt Lake City holds an extensive collection of microfilm copies of Irish civil registration. These include the indexes to births, marriages and deaths (1845-1959) for both the Republic and Northern Ireland. The original records in the FHL collection are listed here.

Many of the earliest Irish civil registration of births (1864-1879) and marriages (1845) have been indexed in two widely accessible sources, one available on the Internet and the other on CD-ROM. Both were produced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons), which operates the FHL in Salt Lake City. Usually a particular Irish civil registration entry only appears in one or the other source, so be sure to check both:

1.  The International Genealogical Index (IGI):  Most births in Irish civil registration dating circa 1864-1866 are on the IGI, along with many Protestant marriages circa 1845-1849.

2.  British Isles CD-ROM Vital Records Index (second edition) (Salt Lake City: Intellectual Reserve, 2001) on compact disc. The CD-ROM contains data (dating 1538-1906) from over 12 million birth, christening, and marriage records from selected parishes and areas in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and the Isle of Man. Using the reference information on the CDs, a researcher can locate the original record on microfilm. Additional features include parent search, book marking, and GEDCOM export. The "Collection Search" and "Collection Browse" allow a search to be undertaken within a particular "collection" of records rather than in the whole database at one time. The cost of the CD-ROM set is USD$20, and the set can be ordered from the FamilySearch.org web site.

The Second Edition includes the following records for Ireland:

  1. Irish Civil Registration of births, circa 1864-1875 (not complete);
  2. Irish Civil Registration of Protestant marriages, circa 1847-1863 (not complete);
  3. Roman Catholic baptisms and marriages, circa 1789-1881, primarily from County Roscommon, also some from counties Galway and Sligo, including:

    Galway parish: Killian and Kilronan

    Roscommon parishes: Ardcarn and Tuamna, Athlone and Drum, Boyle, Dysart, Killinvoy and Killmain, Killucan and Ballinameen (Killucan and Killummond), Killukin, Kiltrustan, Laughlin, Lisanuffy, Loughglynn, Roscommon and Kilteevan, Strokestown, Tissara

    Sligo parishes: Aghanagh, Taunagh

  4. Births and marriages from the National Register of the Society of Friends (Quakers) [dating 1859-1906] (microfilmed by the FHL at the Genealogical Office, FHL Microfilm 571399).
  5. Dublin City Presbyterian Church registers of baptism and marriage, 1653-1904: Eustace Street Presbyterian Church and Strand Street Presbyterian Church (microfilmed by the FHL at the Genealogical Office, FHL Microfilm 100238).
  6. A few births of children in Ireland (though this is mostly an English and Welsh source) in Non-Conformist families [those who dissented from the Established Church of England and Ireland] from the Registers of Dr. Williams's Library (London) (Irish births are primarily in the 1820s, 1830s).

3.  Request a search and photocopy of Irish Civil Registration records. Various records from 1845-1922 are available.
